🌱 Curious about how to Bokashi Compost? 🌱
Bokashi composting is a quick and easy way to recycle kitchen waste into nutrient-rich compost. Here’s a simple 5-step overview to get you familiar with the process:
1. **Add Food Waste and Bokashi Bran to the Bin**:
Start by adding your kitchen scraps to the bokashi bin. Make sure to top it off with bokashi bran, which is essential for the fermentation process.
2. **Drain Liquid from the Bin**:
Drain the excess liquid that accumulates in the bin. This liquid, known as “bokashi tea” or “bokashi extract”, has many beneficial usages such as a natural fertilizer for your plants when diluted with water or a natural drain cleaner.
3. **Repeat Steps 1 & 2**:
Continue to load the bin with food waste and drain excess liquid until the bin is completely full. Depending on the volume of waste you have, it may take you as little as a few weeks or a few months to completely fill.
4. **Ferment the Bin**:
Once full, let the bin sit unopened for at least 2 weeks. This allows the waste to fully ferment, transforming it into “bokashi pre-compost”, also known as “bokashi ferment”.
5. **Mix the Bokashi Pre-Compost with Soil**:
After the fermentation period, mix the bokashi pre-compost with soil. You can bury the pre-compost in your garden, raised garden beds, or existing compost pile. If you don’t have a place to bury the pre-compost, you can create a “soil factory” by combining the pre-compost with soil in one or more containers.
