Bokashi is a two-phase process:
**Phase 1: Fermentation.**
In this initial phase, food waste is placed in a sealed bin to undergo fermentation. You start by layering food scraps and then topping the food scraps with bokashi bran. The bokashi bran contains a unique blend of beneficial microorganisms designed to facilitate the fermentation process. The outcome of this phase is often referred to as “bokashi pre-compost” or “bokashi ferment”.
**Phase 2: Composting.**
Following the fermentation phase, the bokashi pre-compost is then mixed with soil. This step allows the fermented food waste to break down further, ultimately resulting in a nutrient-rich compost that can be used to enhance garden soil and support plant growth.
