Bokashi bran is a specialized composting additive that is used to ferment food waste in bokashi bins.
The bran is a mixture of the following components:
**Carbon source.**
Dried material rich in carbon, such as wheat bran or rice bran.
**Sugar.**
Sugar source, such as molasses.
**Beneficial microbes.**
Bacterial culture called Effective Microorganisms (EM) that consists of yeast, photosynthetic bacteria, and lactic acid bacteria.
Each time you add food waste to a bokashi bin, you add a thin layer of the bokashi bran on top. The beneficial microorganisms in the bran consume the sugars and carbohydrates in the food waste resulting in the fermentation of the waste.
